The decision to appoint Felix Zwayer as the referee for England vs Netherlands and a European Championship semi-final will reunite the German official with Jude Bellingham.
It has also alerted the world to Zwayer’s difficult past.
It is UEFA’s most controversial appointment of the tournament. Back in 2004, when Zwayer was an assistant referee, an investigation revealed he had accepted a €300 payment from Robert Hoyzer — a referee later banned for life for match-fixing — to ensure the outcome of a game between Wuppertal and Werder Bremen II.
Zwayer always denied affecting the outcome of the game in question and a DFB investigation found no evidence that he did, either.
The trouble was the case against Zwayer had been concealed by the German FA (DFB) for a decade.

So, here we are. England and Netherlands in Dortmund, the Bundesliga’s temple of football.
The Dutch fans are down to my left, the South Stand — the Yellow Wall — while the England banners are going up down the other end.
Both semi-finalists tonight have done it their way — and it’s been noteworthy.
Netherlands have won two matches at Euro 2024 despite conceding the first goal.
That was the 2-1 win over Poland in the group stage, and then Turkey by the same score line in the quarter-finals.
Only Czech Republic at Euro 2004 have won three games in which they conceded first at a single championship.
Quite the scene as the England dressing room awaits the arrival of the team coach. Amid shots of the perfectly laid out kits, is the sound of It’s going to take some time by Carpenters.
I would assume this is an England staff choice and that it will swiftly be turned onto something else once the players arrive — unless there is a hidden message in there somewhere.
With England having also reached the final of Euro 2020, they are bidding to achieve the sixth instance of a country making successive European Championship finals.
Those previous five occasions are actually split between three countries — but who are they?
I’ll give you 30 minutes to see if you can come up with the answer, before filling you in with the details.
We have just two hours until kick-off in Dortmund, in the second Euro 2024 semi-final.
We are also about an hour away from the teams being confirmed, with tip-lips all round on the likely team news.
We’ve got loads more on the way for you before we get those XIs too.
Don’t go anywhere.
England supporters have been urged to be “aware of their surroundings” and “seek areas where there is a German police presence” after reports of disorder ahead of tonight’s game in Dortmund.
UK police, who are assisting local authorities in Germany, say there have been “several instances” of Dutch fans attacking England supporters and attempting to steal flags.
The two sides meet later tonight in the semi-finals of Euro 2024.
A spokesperson for the United Kingdom Football Policing Unit (UKFPU) said: “We are aware of some reports and videos circulating of disorder in Dortmund. It appears that there have been several instances of Dutch fans attacking England fans in bars and attempting to steal flags.
“We understand this has resulted in minor injuries to five people. We are also aware that in addition to the tens of thousands of Dutch fans there to enjoy the game, there are groups of risk supporters who have travelled to Dortmund from the Netherlands.
“Our officers are at the location supporting German colleagues. We would advise supporters to be aware of their surroundings and seek areas where there is a German police presence.”
